If you’re starting from a social media account or brick-and-mortar business, you might be on the fence about buying a website. In the case of a super-lean, self-employment project (such as a profit-generating hobby), it is possible to make do without a website if you’re not intending to grow your business. However, in order to properly own and build your brand, as well as control and tailor your customer’s journey from browser to loyal buyer, you’ll want a base of operations that acts as the ‘storefront’ to your business, regardless of a customer’s location, device, or social media preferences.
You’ll be provided with a full contract to ensure that once the signed-for project fee is paid in full, ownership of the project will be transferred to you. You’ll be granted full control over all of its files, databases, and where you choose to host it. Some files (such as software, icons, fonts, or images) may be licenced only for your project from their original sources (such as stock image websites), but we can discuss their acceptable usage for further branding and campaigns and how to extend those licences if necessary. Your domain name, however, must always be yours – registered in your name and under your control to manage and renew. Before your website goes live, we’ll walk you through registering your domain name, if you haven’t already.
When choosing a domain name, it’s important you think about how your visitors will remember it, as well as industry keywords in the domain name which may affect its ranking in search engines (such as ‘plumbing’ or ‘law’), location keywords (‘London’, ‘Sheffield’), whether or not they are part of your company’s registered name, how long the domain name will be, and which TLD extensions would be suitable (for example, .com, .co.uk, .org, .online, .design, etc). There are pros and cons almost every step of the way, so we’d suggest asking for help with this in your free consultation if you don’t already have a domain name.
With each website project, you’ll get one year of free basic managed hosting (worth £150), or that amount of credit towards our other packages, hosted on our partner’s fantastic eco-friendly servers. Depending on your technical ability and confidence, the scale of your project, and the resources required for your website to run smoothly, we can suggest a plan to suit your needs and budget. Of course, once the project is fully paid for, you’re free to host your website wherever you want, and we can help with moving to those servers if you’d prefer your own host.
Absolutely! When your website is launched, we’ll provide you with logins for yourself and/or your team to manage your website’s content. If you ever get locked out, password resetting is quick and automated, so long as you retain access to the associated email account. Depending on the confidence and ability of editors, we can also lock down certain technical features to reduce the risk of accidentally damaging your design, and provide a separate login with these features enabled so you still have full control if you want it. If you don’t want to make changes yourself, you could choose from managed hosting packages which include website amendments, or simply pay as you go for extra assistance when you need it.
There are some amazing platforms for building websites and storefronts out there, and some of them may suit your needs and budget if you’re keen to spend the time on some DIY. However, to ensure you can properly scale your website, keep monthly costs low, avoid crazy commission fees, own your content and domain name without contest, and have full creative flexibility (rather than trying to tweak inflexible templates). Generally, we use self-hosted, open-source Wordpress which we extend and secure with industry-standard premium tools based on your project’s requirements.
A great website which entices its visitors into taking action (making a purchase, downloading a lead magnet, or filling in a contact form) takes a combination of great content (or ‘copy’), imagery (graphic design and/or photography), and consistent branding guidelines which are suitable for digital mediums. However, if you don’t have the time or experience to provide these, we’re happy to help with a more comprehensive package – which means you can simply let us take care of putting together the whole project without fuss. It depends very much on what kind of solution you’d like, and how much you’re willing to invest in the website’s content, SEO, images/photography, branding, and features (such as shops, booking systems, or online courses). Your first one-hour consultation is completely free so we can get to know you and your business and how best we can help with tailored packages, so please book today!
